Maseru - Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa is continuing his visit to Lesotho on Wednesday, his office said.

"Deputy President and SADC facilitator Cyril Ramaphosa will continue with his visit to Lesotho today, his third, to assist and facilitate the current political situation in the country," spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa said.

"The deputy president arrived in Lesotho yesterday where he met with the prime minister and coalition partners, the Independent Electoral Commission, and paid a courtesy call on His Majesty King Letsie III."

Later on Wednesday, Ramaphosa was expected to meet with coalition partners, main political opposition parties, and pay another courtesy call on Letsie III.

He was in the country as part of his Southern African Development Community mandate to facilitate talks to find a lasting solution regarding three main political issues, Mamoepa said.

These were bringing forward elections, the re-opening of Parliament, and the stabilisation of the security situation, as part of SADC efforts to return Lesotho to constitutional normalcy.

The country has been in turmoil since an attempted coup on August 30.

Prime minister Tom Thabane fled to South Africa and Lesotho police officer Mokheseng Ramahloko was killed during the attempted overthrow.

The presidency said in a statement on Tuesday that Ramaphosa was expected to return to South Africa on Wednesday.
