Police spokesperson judgment postponed again─── 10:33 Wed, 15 Oct 2014
Durban - Judgment in the fraud case of former KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Vincent Mdunge was postponed again on Wednesday.
He is accused of presenting a fake matric certificate when he joined the police in 1987 and judgment had been expected on Wednesday.
However, National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Natasha Ramkisson said that after the matter was adjourned on October 1 to Wednesday, it was discovered that the magistrate Thandeka Fikeni had another case that was proceeding on Wednesday.
She said it was then agreed between the prosecution and Mdunge's defence counsel to postpone the matter to November 5 when Fikeni was expected to be available.
Mdunge faces three charges of fraud and one of uttering.
Prosecutor Barend Groen has argued that Mdunge failed matric in 1985 and wrote supplementary exams in 1986, which he also failed.
He argued the matric certificate that Mdunge used was a fake, had been tampered with, and the examination number on the certificate was in fact Mdunge's Standard 8 examination number.
Mdunge's lawyer, advocate Saleem Khan, argued that the education department had made an error on the certificate and Mdunge should not be held liable for this.
Mdunge's former teacher told the court in May that he personally handed Mdunge a matric certificate.
