Post Office may be forced to fire some striking workers: report─── 12:15 Fri, 21 Nov 2014
Pretoria - The Post Office says it may be forced to dismiss some of its employees who've been on strike for almost four months, disrupting services countrywide.
Post Office administrator Simo Lushaba says they haven't received any certificate for the strike.
“There is no union that advised us of a strike. There are people who have not turned up for work and have gone about disrupting all sorts of services of the Post Office. If it does not stop we will have to take the correct measures in terms of our HR policy to dismiss those employees.”
The parastatal says while its reached an agreement with two of three unions, wage talks with the Communication Workers Union (CWU) have collapsed once again.
“We have reached agreements with South African Postal Allied Workers Union and Democratic Postal and Communications Union, and that combined, represents 61 percent of our workforce,” said Lushaba.
The CWU was originally demanding a 15 percent pay hike, but reduced it to 8 percent.
CWU's Clyde Mervin accused the Post Office of not taking strikers seriously.
“The reason why people are currently on the street is because they want full time employment. We have given them a proposal over a period of 16 months, we even compromised it. So I’m saying the Post Office is really not prepared to resolve the problem.”
The union says that it will approach the CCMA if another requested meeting with Lushaba fails.
