Edu dept set on raising standard─── SABRINA DEAN 08:21 Wed, 26 Nov 2014
Bloemfontein - The Basic Education Department says its goals of lifting the standard of education in South Africa will not be hampered by past promotion criteria stating a learner could not fail more than once in a certain phase.
This after the department this weekend formally announced higher promotion requirements for Grade 7, 8 and 9 learners, including the need to pass eight out of nine subjects and attain a minimum of 50% in their home language. Sabrina Dean/OFM News
Spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says if a child fails, the system will have to respond holistically to ensure a promotion the following year.
It is not clear whether the automatic promotion policy will remain in place or be phased out as part of the department’s efforts to raise standards. He adds everyone needs to rise to the requisite standard.
