Make a noise for Madiba next Friday | News Article

Bloemfontein - South Africans are being urged to make a noise ahead of observing a moment of silence at 10am on Friday December 5 to commemorate the one year anniversary of the passing of the father of the nation, Nelson Mandela.

The Department of Social Development and Nelson Mandela Foundation today outlined numerous plans to commemorate the day.

NMF chief executive Sello Hattang says wreaths will be laid at significant points across the country, including the Madiba statue in Mangaung.

He says Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation from Freedom Park in Pretoria directly after a moment of silence is observed at 10am. Hattang says bells will toll and sirens will sound to ring in the moment:

Hattang says people can blow vuvuzelas, hoot their cars or make any noise to be part of the commemoration.
He has also urged everyone to honour Madiba’s memory by trying to do something good next Friday, in the same spirit as the internationally recognized Mandela Day celebrated annually on 18 July..

Bikers have also been invited to participate in commemoration events by revving for Mandela and dedicating their breakfast run on Sunday December 7 to Madiba’s memory.

Other events include the Nelson Mandela Legacy Cup, which will see the Proteas in a cricket clash with the Springboks at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Friday afternoon.

The NMF is also launching an exhibition titled “In Tribute to Nelson Mandela” at its Centre of Memory in Johannesburg on 4 December. Hattang says it will be on display until 16 December 2014.

South Africa’s first democratically elected President, Nelson Mandela, passed away at his home in Johannesburg in the early hours of 5 December 2013 at the age of 95. The country and millions across the world celebrated his legacy during the official ten day mourning period ahead of his funeral on 15 December 2013.
