Malema, 11 other EFF MPs suspended without pay─── 07:26 Fri, 28 Nov 2014
Cape Town - Julius Malema and 11 fellow Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Members of Parliament (MPs) have been suspended from Parliament for between 14 and 30 days, without pay.
Another eight EFF MPS will have to make apologies in the house and forfeit two weeks' salary. Eyewitness News understands the sanctions kick in from today.
This was the outcome of the National Assembly sitting on Thursday night which adopted the report finding them guilty as charged for disrupting President Jacob Zuma's question and answer session in the house in August, when chanting ‘pay back the money’ over spending on Nkandla.
The EFF is now set to go to court over the matter.
Malema and Chief Whip Floyd Shivambu are among those suspended for 30 days.
But the EFF leader has made light of the punishment.
“We do not have a problem with the outcomes of the committee because we have made peace with those outcomes long before they were announced here. Because they were predetermined.”
Opposition parties on Thursday slammed the report finding the EFF MPs guilty of contempt of Parliament as flawed, accusing the African National Congress (ANC) of using the powers and privileges committee to serve its political ends.
But after an attempted EFF filibuster saw temperatures rise, the report was adopted.
