Blue light driver sentenced to five years in prison | News Article

Krugersdorp - Blue light driver Joseph Motsamai Semitjie, who knocked over Thomas Ferreira while going through a red light, was sentenced to five years in prison for reckless and negligent driving by die Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court today.

Eyewitness News reports that he will, however, only serve 10 months. The former driver of then Gauteng housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi was arrested and convicted after crashing into biker Ferreira in November 2011. Ferreira, who was 18 years old at the time, suffered head injuries and was comatose for weeks. During the trial, the court heard that Semitjie, who was driving Mmemezi to a meeting at the time, was driving on the left side of the yellow line, had not switched on his siren and had jumped a red traffic light.
