• 1956: Susan Shabangu, SA Deputy Minister of Minerals and Energy and member of the ANC Steering Committee, is born.
• 1986: Sweden's Prime Minister Olof Palme is assassinated on a street in Stockholm. Christer Pettersson (42) later alleged that SA was involved, but it has never been proven.
• 1970: Bicycles permitted to cross Golden Gate Bridge.
• 2007: Tumi Seboka, regional land claims commissioner, says South Africa is prepared to increase seizures of White-owned land to fulfil a promise to restore property to the Black majority.

• 1960: US wins Olympic hockey gold medal by defeating Canada.
• 1991: Don Mattingly named 10th NY Yankee Captain.
