Tik worth R6.7m seized at OR Tambo: Sars | News Article

Johannesburg - Tik with an estimated street value of R6.7 million was seized at OR Tambo International Airport, the SA Revenue Service said on Tuesday.

A total of 22.6kg of the drug was found in possession of a woman arriving in Johannesburg from Dubai on Monday, Sars spokeswoman Marika Muller said.

The woman was identified for further checks and denied having any luggage.

"Her ticket however indicated that she had checked in luggage, and this was confirmed by messages on a cellphone in her hand luggage.

Airport staff found the luggage and handed it to Sars.

A sniffer dog reacted positively when led to her luggage.

"The luggage was then searched and found to contain six small plastic crèche tables (tables for small children)," Muller said.

"One of these was dismantled and found to contain a substance which has been confirmed as crystal methamphetamine (Tik)."

The woman and her bags were handed to airport police.

Muller said over the weekend Sars seized drugs with an estimated street value of nearly R16m at the airport.

On Sunday, a man travelling from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Lagos, Nigeria via Johannesburg was allegedly found with 6.7kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of R1.7m hidden in jam tins.

A woman with a connecting flight to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo was found in possession of more than 16.8kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of R4.8m concealed in her handbags.

On Friday evening, a man travelling from Cotonou, Benin was found with three bags, each containing a jerry can with 30 litres of liquid ecstasy, with an estimated street value of R9m, in small plastic bags.
