Zuma takes swipe at Nkandla critics─── 13:43 Wed, 25 Mar 2015
Midrand – President Jacob Zuma used his address at the inaugural Black Industrialists Indaba in Midrand, Gauteng, to take a swipe at critics of his Nkandla homestead which was developed and upgraded at a cost of R246 million to the public purse, by saying that some people believed that because of its rural setting he was not entitled to undertake construction on such a large scale.
Zuma digressed from his prepared speech and suggested that merely because of his rural setting, he was not expected to undertake construction of the nature and scale as that seen at Nkandla.
Speaking in Zulu, Zuma said that “if you live in a (rural) area, you are not expected to build such a house. If you do they ask where you get the money, suggesting you stole it”.
The R246 million was ostensibly spent on security upgrades at Zuma’s homestead, but has been found not to be be entirely the case by the Public Protector who has recommended that the president pay back some of the money.
