Police minister 'mulling' over Phiyega advice─── 09:21 Tue, 07 Apr 2015
Johannesburg - Police Minister Nathi Nhleko is "mulling" over legal advice he received regarding proposed disciplinary action against police commissioner General Riah Phiyega.
This is relating to the matter of Western Cape commissioner Lieutenant-General Arnold Lamoer whom she allegedly tipped off about an investigation.
"Yes he [the minister] received legal advice," ministry spokesperson Musa Zondi told News24.
"He is mulling over it."
In October 2013, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate said it would investigate allegations that Phiyega had tipped off Lamoer about an investigation against him by crime intelligence.
Phiyega reportedly told Lamoer on three occasions that she was aware he was under investigation.
At the time it was reported that their telephone conversations had been legally recorded by crime intelligence operatives monitoring Lamoer’s calls.
Phiyega denied tipping off Lamoer.
Last year, the National Prosecuting Authority announced that it would not pursue complaints against Phiyega of defeating the end of justice.
On top of this the police commissioner could face the axe over recommendations made in the report on the Marikana Commission of Inquiry.
According to City Press on Sunday, eight senior sources within or close to the police last week told the paper that the Marikana report, handed to President Jacob Zuma, recommended that she “face charges” for her role in the police operation that led to the deaths of 34 striking miners in August 2012.
