'Mass education campaign necessary to quell xenophobia' | News Article

Johannesburg - A political analyst believes a mass education campaign is pivotal if the mindset of those who are intolerant of foreign nationals in the country is to be changed.

Professor Shadrack Gutto was speaking at an anti-xenophobia talk at Durban's Mangosuthu University of Technology on Tuesday.

He believes a revision of the history curricula at schools and universities may assist in producing more conscious South Africans who understand and appreciate their ties to foreign nationals from other countries on the continent.

Gutto also took a swipe at King Goodwill Zwelithini saying the monarch could've easily put out the raging fire during his speech at the Imbizo he convened on Monday in Durban.

The king has been accused of having fuelled the xenophobic violence in KwaZulu Natal after saying foreigners must pack up and go back to their countries during a rally in Pongola last month.

Seven people have been killed in Durban and Johannesburg as a result of the attacks.
