ANC does u-turn on Child Maintenance Amendment Bill─── THANDI XABA 15:55 Wed, 22 Apr 2015
Bloemfontein - South Africa has about nine million children who grow up in single parent households.
In thousands of cases an absent parent is not held accountable by the law for not honouring their financial obligations to their children.
The DA’s George Michalakis says they have launched a national petition in support of black-listing child maintenance defaulters. He adds the Child Maintenance Amendment Bill is currently being discussed in Parliament and Clause 11 of this Bill will allow the black-listing of defaulters, but the ANC has now decided to remove this clause entirely.
He says by opposing black-listing, the ANC is effectively supporting non-payment leaving thousands of children suffering the consequences.

Nearly 48% of the country’s children have a living parent who is absent from their lives.
