IRR calls for deregulation of labour laws─── THANDI XABA 15:42 Tue, 05 May 2015
The recent labour law amendments to regulate labour broking are almost certain to deprive a huge number of unskilled young people in the country the opportunity to put their foot on the job ladder for the first time. The is according to the Institute of Race Relations in response to its recent report 'Born Free but Still in Chains'.
Spokesperson Mienke Steytler says young people have to be given better prospects since they will be running the country in the future.
The IRR says plans to extend minimum wages is also likely to price even more young people out of the labour market. In the second quarter of last year people aged 15 to 24 had the highest official unemployment rate at 52%, while over 3 million people in that age group are not in employment, education, or with training.
