Gauteng education MEC gives Curro one last chance | News Article

Johannesburg - Curro Roodeplaat Primary has been given one more chance to correct their actions of alleged racial segregation.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said he had "suspended his decision" to shut down the school and revoke its licence.

He said he had been engaged in robust discussions with the school and they have vowed to change.

The school has decided to change its leadership, including their principal.

More teachers of colour would also be brought in.

"I am convinced that they have learnt their lesson," Lesufi told reporters in Johannesburg.

This followed a video depicting school pupils being led off buses, apparently according to race, while on a field trip.

White pupils waited near the front of a car, while groups of other pupils, who appear to be black, were led off-screen in separate groups.

The group in front of the car were then led off-screen in a different direction.

In February, the school first made headlines after about 30 parents wrote a petition to the principal over classes that appeared to be separated along racial lines.

Lesufi ordered an investigation after allegations that there was “pressure from some white parents” to segregate at the school.

After the more recent video footage emerged, he visited the school again and declared its actions "racist" and "disgusting".
