TB, HIV/AIDS still the leading causes of death amongst SA youth | News Article

Johannesburg - TB and HIV/AIDS continue to be the leading causes of death amongst South African youth.

That's according to the latest figures by Stats SA in a census carried out between 2007 to 2013 released on Monday.

The morbidity and mortality report shows that between that period, 16,8 percent of young women died of Tuberculosis as opposed to 11,8 percent of men.

HIV and AIDS, the second leading cause of youth mortality, claimed the lives of 10.1 percent of the young population in the country.

Statistician-General Pali Lehohla says the picture speaks to a broader range of issues government needs to attend to.

The Eastern Cape recorded the highest number of such deaths.
