Durban - Police are probing the kidnapping of a woman while she was jogging through Glenwood, allegedly at the hands of three armed men.
It is understood that the woman was accosted and bundled into her car and made to take her attackers back to her home.
Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said a gang of three armed robbers driving a silver or grey VW Polo Vivo kidnapped the woman at gunpoint in Manning Road and drove her to her home in Cato Road in the early hours of Monday morning.
“The woman was out jogging at around 04:55 when a motorist saw the gang hold her up at gunpoint and force her into their car,” he said.
“The brave motorist followed the gang to Cato Road where they forced the woman out of the car at gunpoint and into her home. He then alerted the security officer posted in the guard hut down the road and we immediately responded to the scene.”
Jackson said police officers from the Umbilo station had also arrived at the scene.
“When our officer arrived at the house he found the gang’s car parked in the street and one of the gang members emerged from the house still holding the resident hostage at gunpoint. He forced her into the car and sped off.
"Our officer opened fire at the vehicle tyres and shot one of the tyres. The other two suspects jumped over a wall and fled the scene on foot.
“The police gave chase and rescued the woman from the vehicle which was found abandoned with a burst tyre in Chesterville,” he said.
“The woman was not physically injured during the kidnapping.”
Jackson said it was unclear at this stage whether anything had been stolen from the property.
“The vigilance of the motorist who managed to follow the suspects to the resident’s home paid off and shows that citizens are looking after one another and prepared to work together with the police and security companies to fight crime,” he said.
“We also warn joggers to exercise in groups and to be vigilant when out running in the early mornings.”
