Johannesburg - Data cited by the SA Institute of Race Relations (IRR) shows that the number of subscriptions in the country has increased from over 8 million in 2000 to just above 76 million in 2013.
Spokesperson Mienke Steytler says these figures indicate that many South Africans have access to phones, making communication much easier, and placing the country at the forefront of technology in Africa.
She adds that over the past decade the number of fixed-line telephone connections fell by 22%.
