Cope lays fraud charge against Ellen Tshabalala | News Article

Johannesburg - The Congress of the People (Cope) has laid a charge of fraud against former SABC board chairperson Ellen Tshabalala for allegedly lying about her qualifications.

"It is fraud because she claimed she had qualifications [with which] she got a chairpersonship of the SABC board," Cope spokesperson Dennis Bloem told News24.

"The reason we have done that is we want her to pay each and every cent back to the taxpayer that she had received illegally."

The charge was laid at the Brixton police station in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Bloem said the police had a duty to investigate the case.

"We are expecting them to investigate the case and take the case to court."

Tshabalala quit her position as SABC chair in December last year amid controversy over her tertiary qualifications.

The parliamentary portfolio committee on communications found Tshabalala guilty of two counts of misconduct last year.

One of the charges related to her claim that she had obtained the two qualifications on her CV when she applied for the SABC job, Sapa reported at the time.

The second related to an affidavit she submitted to Parliament stating that her qualifications had been stolen during a burglary at her home.

University of South Africa (Unisa) executive director for legal services Jan van Wyk told a Parliamentary inquiry that though Tshabalala had registered for her BComm degree in both 1988 and 1996, she failed to obtain the qualification.
