Johannesburg - Five men have been arrested after a police officer was shot dead in Jeppestown on Friday morning, Gauteng police said.

Three of the five were wounded during a shoot-out with police officers in Karl Street, Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

Two officers on patrol had gone to investigate a report of a minibus with a group of men inside. The shooting started when they got to the scene.

A constable was hit in the lower body and his R5 rifle stolen. He died on the way to hospital.

His colleague was unhurt. The minibus driver was arrested at the scene. Four men ran away and were caught hiding in a nearby building. A manhunt for three to four other men was underway.

An AK-47 rifle and four pistols were found in the minibus.

The 34-year-old officer’s death brought to four the number of policemen killed in the country this week.

On Wednesday, a 36-year-old police officer died during a shoot-out with robbers at the Vosloorus Crossing mall.

On the same day, Hawks member Warrant Officer Petrus Holz, 50, was stabbed to death on the N2 near the Macassar turn-off, Cape Town, Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

He had stopped to inspect damage to his car after driving over debris.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, a 35-year-old constable was killed during a shoot-out with robbers in Sekampane, Temba, north of Pretoria. He died on arrival at a local hospital.

Deputy Police Minister Maggie Sotyu said 52 police officers had been killed since January, compared to 47 for the same period last year.
