Port Elizabeth - A 35-year-old Port Elizabeth radio presenter appeared briefly in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on a charge of sexual assault.
The popular weekend DJ on community radio station, Kingfisher FM, was arrested at the broadcaster's offices on Tuesday at around 12:15 by plain-clothed detectives who were waiting for him.
The DJ, who has his own business and who was contracted as a freelance weekend presenter by the community station, is believed to have stalked and continually harassed a 22-year-old woman.
Despite being asked to stop calling, the man allegedly persisted, with very detailed conversations that led the woman to believe she would be assaulted or worse.
The man, who cannot be named until he has pleaded, made a brief appearance in court and was released on R2 000 bail. As part of his bail conditions, he was ordered not to make contact with the complainant or her family.
The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit of the police are leading the investigation, with the presenter being charged under Section 5 (2) of the Sexual Offences Act.
The Act states, “A person (‘A’) who unlawfully and intentionally inspires the belief in a complainant (‘B’) that B will be sexually violated, is guilty of the offence of sexual assault.”
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Alwin Labans, confirmed that the man was arrested on Tuesday on charges of sexual assault.
In a statement, Kingfisher FM station manager, Alan Ahlfeldt, confirmed that a weekend presenter was arrested at the station’s premises.
"At no time does Kingfisher condone any abusive behaviour towards another human being. On the contrary, we strive to offer hope, excellence, authenticity and to build relationships, all of this is underlined with the love of Christ," he said.
"We at Kingfisher are vehemently opposed to the abuse of people or our environment and we pray that the truth will be revealed. Our belief is that the law will prevail and that justice will be served."
The man is due back in court on October 22.
