Eskom goes into 23rd load shedding-free day | News Article

Johannesburg - Eskom went into its 23rd day without load shedding on Monday, after the official opening of unit 6 of the Medupi power station.

Medupi unit 6 was opened officially by President Jacob Zuma on Sunday, after being synchronised onto the national grid and a period of testing.

''During this period unit 6 has been able to alleviate pressure on the national electricity system, helping to either avoid load shedding altogether or minimising its severity,'' the utility said.

''We continue to ask our customers for their support in using electricity sparingly throughout the day, and especially during the early morning and evening peak periods.

''Every little bit of savings goes a long way in assisting us to manage the demand and supply of electricity and to reduce the risk of load shedding.''

South Africa went through a gruelling period of load shedding during winter. Eskom suspended its chief executive Tshediso Matona after only six months in the post. On Friday cabinet announced he had been appointed as secretary for national planning in the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation.
