Zuma authorises SIU probe into alleged corruption at Buffalo City municipality─── 15:18 Tue, 22 Sep 2015
Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma signed a proclamation sanctioning a Special Investigating Unit (SIU) probe into alleged corruption and maladministration at the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality in the Eastern Cape, the Presidency said on Tuesday.
The proclamation authorises the SIU to investigate allegations of, among others, maladministration, improper or unlawful conduct by municipal employees, unlawful expenditure, and offences under the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.
“The investigation will cover alleged offences that took place between 1 February 2008 and the date of publication of the Proclamation,” the Presidency said.
Earlier this month, Buffalo City municipal manager Andile Fani was placed on precautionary suspension while an independent probe into allegations of financial misconduct against him was conducted.
Last year, the Hawks arrested the municipality’s mayor, Zukiswa Ncitha, on charges of fraud, corruption, and money laundering related to the council’s funding of events related to the memorial service of former president Nelson Mandela.
