Yengeni 'disappointed' as drunken driving trial goes ahead─── 12:34 Fri, 25 Sep 2015
Cape Town – ANC National Executive Committee member Tony Yengeni's negotiations regarding his drunken driving charge have failed, the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court heard on Friday.
His lawyer Sylvester Vogel confirmed that their representations to the National Director of Public Prosecutions, regarding a possible plea agreement, were unsuccessful.
“We are ready to proceed and arrange a trial date,” he told Magistrate Nasha Banwari.
Yengeni, in a dark suit and white tie, left court quickly.
Outside court, Vogel said: “To some extent, he feels disappointed, but then we must proceed in a positive manner towards the trial.”
The trial was set down for November 27.
Yengeni lives in Johannesburg and is out on bail.
It has been two years since he was arrested in Green Point, Cape Town, after officials allegedly noticed that he did not appear to have proper control of his Maserati.
As an alternative to the drunken driving charge, Yengeni allegedly drove with a blood-alcohol level of 0.25%, five times the legal limit of 0.05%.
When the national director of public prosecutions (NDPP) decided in April to go ahead with the charges against him, the defence pursued the route of plea negotiations.
