Pretoria - The name of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldier who was killed in an ambush by heavily armed rebels in Sudan on Sunday morning has been released.

SANDF spokesperson, Xolani Mabanga, says Private Toto Tom Malashe was based at 8 South African Infantry Battalion in Upington in the Northern Cape. He was a mechanic for the SANDF.

Malashe, who was born in Allanridge near Welkom, leaves behind his wife and four children. He would have turned 32 years old yesterday.

Malashe was part of the United Nations and African Union Mission in Sudan (UNAMIS). His remains are in the process of being repatriated. Mabanga said details regarding the memorial service and funeral arrangements for Malashe will be announced in due course.
