Johannesburg – Over 30,000 National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members will down tools in the coal mining sector from 6pm on Sunday, the union said.

The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA) had issued a certificate of non-resolution to the dispute earlier in the week, acting NUM spokesman Livhuwani Mammburu said in a statement.

“The conciliation came to an abrupt end this week when the parties could not reach an agreement over the R1000 for the lowest category and 14 percent for the artisans, miners, and officials demand by the NUM,” he said.

Anglo Coal and Glencore were offering the lowest paid workers an increment of 8.5 percent and seven percent for artisans, miners, and officials. Exxaro Coal Mpumalanga was offering eight percent for the lowest category and 7.5 percent for artisans, miners, and officials.

Kangra was offering 7.5 percent for the lowest category and seven percent for artisans, miners, and officials. Koornfontein Mine and Delmas were offering five percent for all categories. Msobo Mine was offering seven percent for the lowest category and five percent for artisans, miners, and officials.

“We also want to take this opportunity to strongly condemn Anglo Coal for lying to our members saying that the strike has been suspended until Monday next week. The strike is not suspended and it will continue as planned on Sunday at 6pm,” Mammburu said.
