ANC would lose metros if elections were held this year | News Article

Johannesburg - If the local government elections were held this year the ANC would have lost some of the country's biggest metros to the opposition, according to the party's organisational report presented at the National General Council on Friday.

"Such a realisation would make us appreciate what the implications of such an outcome could mean for changing our local communities, and advancing a radical socio-economic transformation," secretary general Gwede Mantashe said in the report.

The report was delivered by secretary general Gwede Mantashe during a closed session.

According to the report, the ANC's electoral support had been declining since the 2004 elections.

Between 2009 and 2014 there was a significant loss of voter share.

The ANC had experienced decline in support in the four metros the party governed - Nelson Mandela Bay, Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekhurhuleni.

According to the report, the consistent decline between national and local government elections, which was 3%, was a global norm.

However, the party was worried about dropping below 60% next year.

"This would represent a psychological and political turning point that would be interpreted as an indication of the demise of the movement," Mantashe said in the report.

The ANC admitted that voter turnout would potentially continue to decline in its base areas, but the DA was unlikely to progress further.

"However, complacency of our voters is a real threat, as is the threat of choosing wrong candidates."
