Kovsies more upbeat as play-offs looms | News Article
Bloemfontein - The Varsity netball tournament reaches the boiling point as teams will seek victories this weekend to assure them of a spot in the play-offs. On Sunday and Monday, the teams will play their final two rounds of the tournament in Johannesburg to determine who will be a step closer toward the honours.

The defending champions, the University of the Free State are optimistic about their chances of not only making the play-offs, but defending their title as well.

The local girls are confident following their much needed first home victory (53-38) on Monday against the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University - Madibaz, and will look to finish on a high note.

Kovsies will face University of Stellenbosch Maties and Vaal University of Technology on Sunday, 05 October, and Monday, 06 October respectively.

The woman in charge, Burta de Kock says the team will strive to get the victories to end on a high note and seal their spot in the semifinals.

“The team is very positive and working hard. We’re looking forward for a big victory this weekend, which will be a great build up to the semifinals,” she told OFM Sport.

De Kock added that her confident side is aware of the objective at hand, which she admitted they will achieve.

“We’ve gained enough experience. The inexperience one is now settled. We have worked so hard on shooters, because that is the most important problem at this stage.”

Kovsies currently occupy the third spot with 18 points; three points behind the North West University Pukke. Meanwhile, the University of Pretoria – Tuks are at the summit of the standings with 25 points while Maties complete the top four teams with 15 points.

In other matches, Pukke will play Tuks on Sunday and Madibaz on Monday. Both matches will be played in Johannesburg at 17:15 and 17:30 respectively.

The semifinals and final will be played on October 13 and 20 respectively.
