Proteas ready for Malawi at World Cup | News Article

The Proteas netball team are ready to face old nemesis Malawi in their opening game of the Netball World Cup in August.

Yesterday Netball South Africa announced a strong squad to represent South Africa at the tournament in Sydney, Australia.
Coach Norma Plummer stuck to pretty much a settled squad and there were no major surprises.

Recently South Africa beat Africa’s top-ranked team and world number fives Malawi twice at the Diamond Challenge and they see it as great preparation.

Defender, Adele Niemand of the Free State who will be playing in her second World Cup told OFM Sport it was important to beat the team from the great lakes region going into the sports flagship event.

She added that she doesn’t expect them to be as physical as they were last week.

"Going to the World Cup out first game is against Malawi, so we needed to build confidence in order for us to know that we could go into the first game and have a good kick-off for the tournament.

"If you start off well you'll continue to grow on that.

"The physicality we experienced from the African teams is only going to be the same as when we play against the world teams.

"The umpiring is going to be a bit different; I don’t think they (Malawi) will be going in as physical there because they are quite strict.

"We needed that, we needed to know what our strengths are and we needed to capitalise on our weaknesses so that we could work on it.

Maryka Holtzhausen will once again captain the side, while her Free State teammate, Karla Mostert is also selected.

Lauren-Lee Christians has been named as a non-traveling reserve.

The World Cup in Sydney runs from 7 to 16 August.

Proteas - Lenize Potgieter, Melissa Myburgh, Lindie Lombard, Maryka Holtzhausen (captain), Bongiwe Msomi (vice captain), Izette Lubbe, Erin Burger, Precious Mthembu, Rochelle Lawson, Karla Mostert, Adele Niemand, Phumza Maweni.

Non-travelling reserves - Elsunet du Plessis, Lauren-Lee Christians, Zukelwa Cwaba.
