Bloemfontein - The popular worldwide running and walking event, Parkrun, has been happening for 10 years now and according to the organisers, the event continues to grow as more and more people join daily.

Parkrun, or parkwalk, is the 5km running and walking event, which is designed not only for people who are interested in running, but those who are too unfit to run, can walk as well.

The event takes place all around the world, every Saturday morning at 08:00 am.

The Bloemfontein parkrun happens on Navil Hill, and Bryce Fordyce, parkrun director in South Africa lauded the growth of this event.

“The event has grown tremendously since starting back in 2004 in Britain. The turnout in Bloemfontein is growing. We started with 60 runners and walkers, and now there are well above 100 people,” Fordyce told OFM Sport.

“A few days ago we parked around one hundred thousand runners and walkers in 30 different parks in South Africa and there are about a million of parkrunners worldwide, so the event is growing.”

Fordyce also takes part in the event and he mentioned that it is an amazing way to exercise and the event is different every day.

“I also take part in the running as well, but do the different ones around the country. This Saturday (28 June 2014) I’ll be running in the Cannibal Cave in Drakensburg, KwaZulu Natal."

“We don’t only run/ walk inthe hill. We’ve got other ones in the East London and in Durban, they go along the beaches, so they’re all different.”

People who are interested in taking part must just go to www.parkrun.co.za and register.

“Parkrunners are urged to register, print the barcode and bring it along with them, because the barcode get scanned, and you will use it get your results,” Fordyce concluded.
