Bloemfontein - The South African men's hockey team were edged 4-2 by Ireland at the Investic London Cup in the English capital city.
The South Africans trailed 2-1 at the interval but saw that score-line doubled during the second half.
Alan Sothern scored a brace in the 41st and 45th minutes to make it 4-1 while Taine Paton and Lance Louws scored South Africa’s two goals.
Captain, Austin Smith says the tournament will serve well for their Commonwealth Games preparation.
South Africa face the host England tonight at 20:30.
