Bloemfontein - The general manager of the Free State table tennis team, Kgositsile Dry, lauded the Free State teams that received medals in the inter-regional section of the 2014 National Juniors and Seniors Table Tennis Championship held at Tempe military base’s indoor sport centre from 6 to 11 July.

The event comprised the inter regional and the open championship. In the inter-regional event (singles) finals, the Free State team walked away with a silver medal after losing to Western Province in the junior girls u.12 final while the u.14 girls and the u.17 boys claimed bronze medals.

In the doubles finals, the Free State u.12 girls claimed silver medal against Western Province while the u.14 girls managed bronze medal alongside Gauteng Central.

“The tournament started well, though the Free State team did not win gold. However, the players performed well and did their best to maintain the standard of other teams,” Mr Dry told OFM.

“I’m glad they bagged couple of medals at the end of the tournament, which is something positive,” he added.

Western Province dominated the inter-regional category from the beginning and as a result had all eight of its teams in the finals.

Seven of Western Province’s eight teams claimed the titles, with the u.12 boys being the only team losing to KwaZulu-Natal’s Uthukela in the finals.

The Free State u.14 girls walked away with the bronze medal while the boys lost out to Umgungundlovu and Uthukela A, who also claimed the bronze.

Rivaldo le Grange of the Free State u.14 boys team said they did everything right, but panicked against Western Province.

“We performed very well, but feared the name when we heard we were going to play against Western Province. We wanted gold, however, we stopped believing in ourselves at some point in the tournament,” Le Grange said.

“The team tried their best to reach the finals, but it was not meant to be. All the junior sides learned a lot from the senior members and that’s what they will be taking home; skills and techniques learnt from the seniors,” concluded Mr. Dry.

In the Open Event (Singles), Free State u.12 girls claimed two bronze medals.
