Evictions a problem in FS, says Nkwinti. Steytler reacts─── 11:55 Fri, 17 Oct 2014
Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Gugile Nkwinte, has highlighted the Free State as one of the areas where the illegal eviction of farm workers is a problem and says steps are being taken to assist victims.
Departmental spokesperson Linda Paige says the Free State, the New Castle-area in KwaZulu-Natal and the Cape Winelands have been identified as problem areas.
Nkwinti is sending officials on a fact finding mission to establish how to further support victims.
Agri SA's Louw Steytler says government has to do its job, but populist statements and many allegations about farmworker-evictions are questionable.
Steytler says Nkwinti and government must follow a holistic approach and realise that farm workers and farmers can only flourish in a sound economic environment where investors’ confidence is created.
"Government has a responsibility towards farm workers, farmers and investors."
