SA loses R7,5-billion in electricity theft each year─── SABRINA DEAN 17:38 Thu, 05 Feb 2015
Bloemfontein - Agriculture and energy stakeholders attending a workshop on energy saving, sustainability and climate change at Glen Agricultural College outside Bloemfontein this afternoon, heard that SA loses at least R7.5-billion a year to electricity theft annually.
This was revealed by Eskom’s Eugene Myburgh.
He is driving social awareness of the cost of electricity theft through Eskom’s Operation Khanyisa campaign and is urging the agriculture sector to be wary of tampering by taking up “too good to be true” offers that promise to cut electricity bills by as much two thirds.
Greenstuff founder Lorraine Jenks meanwhile said in her presentation that 2014 was the warmest year on record.
She says the agriculture sector needs to be aware of climate change realities, particularly in Africa, where according to Jenks a temperature increase of just 1.5 to 3 degrees Celsius could impact large percentages of valuable agriculture land.
