Agri SA involved in development of new entrants to agricultural sector─── 16:43 Thu, 12 Mar 2015
Pretoria - Agri SA’s Labour and social policy committee, with the financial assistance of AgriSETA and expertise provided by the University of Pretoria, has developed a training programme that focuses on the empowerment of new entrants to the agricultural sector.
“Land reform is a priority fully supported by the agricultural sector. The success of land reform must, however, be measured by the extent to which new entrants make a positive contribution to food security, job creation and rural development.
"For this reason, all role players in agriculture have an obligation to ensure that new entrants to the agricultural industry are empowered with the necessary knowledge and skills to make a success of their farming operations,” said Agri SA Labour and social policy committee chair Hendrik Ackermann.
The first training programme commenced in 2014 with 20 participants from various provinces and commodity branches being trained in agricultural principles such as business management, production and operational managements, and risk and resource management. During a certificate-presentation function, the first group of participants received recognition for having successfully completed the training course.
“I am of the opinion that this training programme is a step in the right direction and that the agricultural sector will in due course enjoy the fruit of this initiative. I hope that, with the financial support of AgriSETA, more of these training programmes can be offered,” said Ackermann.
