Alaskan farmer brings life to the tundra | News Article

Bethel, Alaska - An Alaskan farmer is using innovative techniques to take advantage of long summer days and lush loamy soils hidden beneath the white expanse of the Tundra.

National Public Radio reports in the article “Alaska Farmer Turns Icy Patch Of Tundra Into A Breadbasket” that Tim Meyers was last year able to produce more than 20 000 kg of potatoes, beets, carrots and other vegetables on his 1.6 hectare plot in the town of Bethel in southwestern Alaska.

He says soil preparation is intensive and can take as long as two years, but nonetheless believes he has found America’s newest breadbasket.

Meyers told NPR the secret behind his yield is actually the soil, which is fed by glacial silt, rich in nutrients.
