Food safety under global spotlight─── 18:37 Wed, 08 Apr 2015
Bloemfontein - The World Health Organisation (WHO) yesterday celebrated World Health Day under the theme Food Safety.
According to the WHO, more than 200 diseases are caused by unsafe food, while more than 2-million deaths can be attributed to contaminated food or drinking water.
South Africa’s Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) meanwhile said in a statement it will continue to develop policies and regulatory measures which support the Industry to produce food that is safe.
According to DAFF, food safety is the responsibility of all stakeholders along the food production value chain – in other words, from farm to plate.
The department adds that food safety has become a “currency to access lucrative markets across the globe”.
