Brown shatters 800m freestyle record | News Article

Myles Brown has continued shine on day three of the National Swimming Championships at the Kings’ Park pool in Durban.

Brown won the 800m freestyle by breaking the 6-year-old record of Troyden Prinsloo.

The swimming who beat Chad le Clos during the 200m freestyle on Wednesday posted a time of by of 7 minutes 53.97 second to smash the old record by a full second.

This comes four days after he also improved Ryk Neethling's national mark in the 400m freestyle that has been standing since 1999.

The win also qualified him for his third individual event for the FINA World Long Course Championships in Kazan after qualifying 200m and 400m freestyle earlier in the championships.

The 22-year-old swimming said he was gunning for qualifying times instead of the records.

"I wasn’t sure that I was still within the time of the record - it was a bit unexpected for me," Brown said.

"For all the previous races getting the qualifying time on Monday really took the pressure off.

"I am definitely going to go out for the 100 free but I will focus more on the 200m free as I am stronger in that event."

So far only Brown, Le Clos, Cameron van der Burgh and Sebastien Rousseau have qualified to the World Champions in Russia later this year.
