Bethlehem - Hundreds of Grade 11 science and biology pupils had an opportunity to get up close and personal with scientists during the Agricultural Research Council's Small Grain Institute open days in Bethlehem on April 15 and 16.
ARC's Elri Burger says there is a huge shortage of scientists in South Africa and they have realised school children are generally very ignorant when it comes to what scientists actually do:

She says during the two days they will be able to take pupils who are potential candidates for a career as a scientist through the institute, allow them to interact with scientists and give them a glimpse of some of the equipment and technology being used.
She says the Open Days would cater for more than 500 pupils from 12 different schools in and around Bethlehem.
