Bloemfontein - Ask any farmer which harvester is the quickest and most efficient, and he will most likely say his own is the best.
This debate was put to the test at Grootpan farm on the road between Lichtenburg and Koster in North West last week, where harvesters representing all the big names were in a race to be crowned the best of the bunch.
Race organiser Andre du Preez says it’s a fun event, but the study group also takes it very seriously, with harvesters judged on speed, efficiency, lack of spillage and so forth:

He says he and his brother first hosted the race in 2004 and it has since grown to a fully-fledged farmer’s day drawing hundreds of spectators.

Hundreds of farmers were present for the annual harvester Race at Grootpan farm last week.
It was ready, steady, go as harvesters participated in a 400m race.
Speed only counts for 50%, with the rest of the score based on criteria to determine efficiency.
