Diesel drop to feed back into agri sector | News Article

Bloemfontein - An anticipated 17c/l drop in the price of diesel at the start of May is expected to save farmers just over R4 per hectare being harvested and delivered to a silo.

This is according to a report on Farmers Weekly, which states that farmers planting winter crops are also set to benefit from the fuel price decrease.

The report quotes Grain SA’s production cost analyst Petru Fourie as saying SA’s maize producers typically use about 24 litres per hectare during harvesting and grain transport. She adds that a decline in fuel costs could lower other production costs, such as of fertiliser and seed.

Fourie also highlighted the 15,6% decrease in the year-on-year April 2014 to April 2015 diesel price, which she says saved the country’s crop farmers approximately R680 million collectively in production costs.
