Bloemfontein - Agriculture Minister Senzeni Zokwana is scheduled to open the annual Red Meat Abattoir Association Conference in Somerset West in the Cape this week.
This is according to a report on stockfarmafrica.co.za, which says the focus of the conference will be on management of a changing meat safety environment.
The article quotes RMAA General Manager Dr Gerhard Neethling as saying an international study shows that meat consumers are increasingly demanding that animals be reared, handled, transported and slaughtered in a manner that ensures safe and healthy meat.
The RMAA says the challenges of the abattoir industry are not only restricted to the abattoir but also changing consumer preference , production systems , certification systems and legislation in related spheres.
The conference takes place from May 20 – 22.
