NWU student pioneers dry climate oyster mushroom cultivation technique | News Article

Bloemfontein - A North West University Master’s student has come up with a ground-breaking new technique that will enable people to cultivate oyster mushrooms in dry climatic conditions.

Crop Science student Sydwell Sihlangu has come up with an innovative technique to use crop residues as substrate to grow Oyster Mushrooms, even in the arid town of Mahikeng. He is working under the supervision of Dr Khosi Ramachela, who says cultivation of oyster mushrooms is usually a very technical process:

The oyster mushroom species, pleurotus ostreatus, is usually cultivated in the temperate and subtropical regions of the world.
 
According to a statement, it is considered an important macro fungi that produces high levels of quality protein from various agro-wastes.
