Farm attack realities laid bare at victimology symposium | News Article

Bloemfontein - Delegates attending the 15th International Symposium of the World Society of Victimology in Perth, Australia, were astounded at realities faced by victims of farm attacks in South Africa.

This is according to Afriforum criminologist Lorraine Claasen following her presentation to the symposium today.

She says they felt they needed to get the message across and inform people of the nature and extent of farm attacks:

Her presentation highlighted that farm murders are not specifically categorised by police, which makes it difficult to get a true reflection of the extent of the problem. She also highlighted the levels of violence and brutality, adding there were numerous questions from delegates about what the police and government are doing about the problem.

Claassen says the symposium has also provided a lot of insight into the rights of victims. She says Afriforum will bring these lessons back to South Africa to try and champion the rights of victims of farm attacks.
