Bloemfontein - The community of Memel is being invited to participate in a public awareness programme during which the SA Weather Service and the Department of Environmental Affairs will engage with them on the impact of climate change.
Deputy Environment Minister Barbara Thomson will address the event on severe weather awareness, climate change and agro-meteorological services in the area.
Her spokesperson Harry Masenya says Memel has been identified as an area that is already experiencing weather extremes:

The awareness programme, being piloted in the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, stems from a partnership between the SA Weather Service and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development to train extension officers and farmers on the application of agro-meteorological information.
According to a statement, climate change is thought most likely to have a significant impact on food availability, food accessibility and stability of the global food system.
The programme takes place at Esizibeni Senior Secondary School, Memel, from 9am on Wednesday.
