Van der Burgh breaks 50m WR in Kazan | News Article

South Africa’s Cameron van der Burgh has broken his own 50m breaststroke World Record during the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia.

The 27-year-old South African shaved 0.05 seconds of his own time he set back in 2009 when performance enhancing suites will still permitted in the sport.

Van der Burgh touched the wall in a time 26.62 seconds during the heats.

The swimming clinched silver last night after narrowly losing out to Britain’s Adam Beaty in the final of the 200m breaststroke.

Beaty edged the South African by just 0.07 seconds after coming from behind for the win.

Following his race, Van der Burgh said he is still expecting a few fast races during this evening's events.

"I am really happy after the bitter-sweet disappointment of last night, when I didn't get the luck of the touch. But I guess I had it today.

"We are all so close, it's not going to be a one- or two-horse race, there are a lot of guys in the mix and it's going to be very tight.

This is the fifth time a world record has been broken in Kazan and it is the first time a men's record has been broken at a world championships since 2011.
