Agri SA welcomes report into farm safety and security─── SABRINA DEAN 15:16 Fri, 21 Aug 2015
Bloemfonten - Agri SA has committed itself to taking hands with all relevant roleplayers to work towards improving the safety and security of farming communities, sooner rather than later.
This following the release of a report by the SA Human Rights Commission into a national hearing on farm safety and security. The report found that clear gaps exist in the rural development and safety and security within farming communities and stated it is essential that collaborative effort is put forward for the future of foood security.
Agri SA Rural Safety Committee Chairperson Kobus Breytenbach says they welcome the findings, as well as recommendations to address shortcomings:
'Kobus Breytenbach - shortcomings'
He says the report will now be sent to parliament, with the SAHRC expected to give feedback in a year’s time. Breytenbach adds, however, that with 33 murders this year alone, we cannot afford to sit back and wait:
'Kobus Breytenbach - action'
The report comprised 14 comprehensive recommendations. Some of these include that law enforcement agencies such as the SAPS and NPA should step up their responses in combatting these crimes against farming communities; that stereotypes on farming be addressed; that racial relations in farming communities are addressed; and that in light of the successes of certain CPFs, more should be established.
A copy of the report is available on the SAHRC website.
