CSA women head to Durban for national awards | News Article

Bloemfontein - South Africa’s top female farmers will gather in Durban later this week for the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ annual Female Entrepreneur Awards.

The awards this year are being presented under the theme ‘Uniting to empower women to achieve economic freedom through agriculture, forestry and fisheries’.

Numerous women will represent Central South Africa after taking top honours in their respective provincial competitions. Farmers’ Weekly reports that Phindi Abdulla of Khuphuka Salgap Projects in Bojanala Platinum District was named overall winner of North West provincial leg of the competition after scooping top honours in the export market category.

Northern Cape announced its winners earlier this month with the top entrepreneur in export, Margeret Botha, also announced as the overall winner.

In the Free State, category winners were announced last week. Spokesperson for the department of agriculture and rural development, Zimasa Leputla, says Joyce Tyelwani is the top female farmworker, Martha Shuping is the best subsistence farmer and Sophie Mabeba is the top smallholder farmer. Top Commercial farmer in the Free State for 2015 is Tebogo Ditsebe.

The national awards event takes place at the Durban Botanical Gardens on Thursday evening.
