Viljoen takes bronze in Beijing | News Article

South African javelin queen, Sunette Viljoen has capped off South Africa’s IAAF World Championship in Beijing in China by claiming the bronze in the women's javelin.

The South African briefly took the lead and had the gold medal in her grasp with two attempts remaining during the final day of completion.

With a heave of 65.79m in the fourth round the gold was Viljoen, however Lyu Huihui took the lead with a 66.13m attempt in the penultimate round.

However, it was the last throw of the competition that won the gold when Germany’s Katerina Molitor launched her javelin 67.60m to win gold.
Viljoen said no one saw the competition going down to the wire.

"It was an awesome competition to be part of but yoh it happened so fast where I was in the lead in the fourth round.

"Then the Chinese girl came with the 66 metre throw and with the last throw of the competition the German girl won.

"I don't think anyone saw that coming but what a magnificent performance by Kathrina to win."

Viljoen’s Bronze took the South Africa’s medals tally to three and 13th in the standings over all after Bloemfontein’s Wayde van Nierkerk won the gold in the men’s 400m and Anaso Jobodwana clinched the bronze in the men’s 200m last week.
