TAU SA won't compromise to uninformed land reform process | News Article

Bloemfontein - The Transvaal Agricultural Union of South Africa says it cannot compromise itself to a ‘land reform process’ aimed at dishing out hectares without an understanding of the connection between land, food and the expertise of commercial farmers.

This was according to newly re-elected President Louis Meintjies during his speech at the organisation’s annual congress in Pretoria this week.

Meintjies told delegates that the expertise prevalent among its members is critical in ensuring the commercial agriculture is able to produce food for more than 50-million people, excluding the needs of neighbouring countries.

He also emphasised the role of expert farmers in promoting cooperation and education, as well as transferring skills to new farmers.

Meintjies says TAU SA does not want to isolate itself from the process but is urging government allow commercial agriculture the space to utilise the available human capital.

Some of the key decisions adopted during Congress include plans to focus on narrowing the gap between farmers and consumers, increase its international profile and a continuation of TAU SA’s efforts around practical agricultural training.
